However, as shown in the illustration, the template strand varies from gene to gene along the length of a chromosome. For each gene, the RNA chain grows in the 5' to 3' direction and antiparallel to the template strand. Therefore, two RNA molecules transcribed from different template strands will be synthesized with opposite orientations from one another. The existence of transcriptional initiation and termination signals in the DNA sequence indicate where each transcript should begin and end.
